For kids: the short version

  • We don't know your real name. You're just your username and your game name. If you change your game name, your grown-up gets told.
  • Your grown-up told us the month and year you were born, so we can give you missions that suit your age. Nobody else sees it.
  • You add friends by swapping friend codes, and only if your grown-up says yes. Only give your code to people you know in real life.
  • Your friends only see your game name, your buddy, your level and your XP. No chat, no photos.
  • We never sell anything about you, and there are no adverts.
  • Your grown-up can delete your account at any time, and everything goes with it.

Who we are

Voxie is made by House of Kay. We decide how your information is used (the "data controller"). For any question or request about your information, email hello@house-of-kay.co.uk.

What we collect

About grown-ups

  • Your name, as you'd like your kids to see it (e.g. "Mum").
  • Your email address, to log in, confirm your account and reset your password.
  • Your password. We never see it: it's stored scrambled (hashed) by our database provider.
  • Which children you look after, and any invite codes you make to share a child with another grown-up.

About children

We keep as little as we can. We never ask for a child's real name, email address, full date of birth, gender, photos or location.

  • A username and passcode that their grown-up makes up. The passcode is stored scrambled (hashed).
  • The month and year they were born, given by their grown-up. We use it only to work out their age so they get missions that suit it. Only their grown-up can change it.
  • A game name: the name friends see. It starts as their username and they can change it to another made-up name. Every game name is unique, and their grown-ups are told when it changes.
  • Buddy names they choose in the game.
  • What they do in the game: tasks set and ticked, missions answered, XP, levels, items, buddies, game settings, their friend code, friend requests and friends. We also count how many wrong friend codes they type each day, only to stop codes being guessed.
  • Pictures they draw (wall art for their buddy's house) and the names they give them. Only the child and their grown-ups can see these, unless the child gives one to a friend: then that friend and the friend's grown-ups can see it. The friend sees the game name of who gave it; grown-ups don't.

Technical information

  • Our providers keep short-term logs (such as IP addresses and log-in times) to keep the service running and secure.
  • Your browser stores a log-in token, so you stay logged in, and a note of whether we've suggested installing the app. These aren't used for tracking.
  • If you turn on notifications on a device (reminders, and for children, gifts from friends), we keep that device's notification address so we can send them. Turning notifications off, or logging out, deletes it.
  • Visit counts: we count visits to Voxie's front page, before anyone logs in, with Cloudflare Web Analytics. It uses no cookies and doesn't identify you. Nothing is counted once someone has logged in, so children playing are never counted.
  • No adverts and no tracking.

Why we use it

  • To run Voxie: your accounts, your child's game, their progress and the settings you choose. This is the service you ask for when you sign up and add your child.
  • To pick missions that suit your child's age.
  • To send account emails to grown-ups: confirming your account and resetting your password. We don't send marketing emails.
  • To send notifications you've turned on.
  • To see how many people visit the front page, so we know if people can find Voxie.
  • To keep Voxie safe and fair: for example, every Mystery box roll is recorded so any "that's not fair!" can be checked.

Children's accounts are only ever made by their grown-up, who agrees to Voxie using their child's information as described here.

Who can see it

  • The grown-ups linked to a child can see that child's progress, tasks, settings and login username.
  • Friends (only children who've both said yes) see a child's game name, buddy, level and XP. They never see usernames or birth dates.
  • Nobody can search for a child. Children add friends only by typing a friend's code, and only if a linked grown-up has turned friends on for them. It starts off for new children. Typing a code shows just that child's game name and buddy, and they still have to say yes.
  • A child can make a new friend code at any time, and the old one stops working. Turning friends off cancels any requests waiting; friends they already have stay.
  • We never sell or share your information for advertising.

Who helps us run Voxie

These companies process information for us, only to provide their service:

  • Supabase: our database and log-ins. Your data is stored in the EU (Frankfurt, Germany).
  • Render: hosts the Voxie website.
  • Resend: sends our account emails.
  • Cloudflare: counts visits to the front page (no cookies, no personal information).
  • Your browser's notification service (such as Google, Apple, Microsoft or Mozilla): delivers reminders to devices where they're turned on. The message is encrypted on the way.
  • Google Fonts and jsDelivr: deliver the fonts and a code library the page uses. Your browser contacts them directly, so they see your IP address.

Some of these providers may handle information outside the UK. When they do, it's protected by the safeguards UK data protection law requires.

How long we keep it

  • We keep information while the account exists.
  • Deleting a child's account (from the child's tab in your grown-up account) removes all of that child's information straight away.
  • To delete your grown-up account, email us and we'll do it.
  • Copies in our providers' backups and logs are overwritten within a short time.

Your rights

You can ask to see, correct or delete the information we hold about you or your child, ask us to stop or limit using it, or ask for a copy to take elsewhere. Email hello@house-of-kay.co.uk and we'll reply within one month.

If you're unhappy with how we've handled your information, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO): ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint or 0303 123 1113. We'd appreciate the chance to put it right first.

Changes

If we change how we use information, we'll update this page and the date at the top. For big changes, we'll tell grown-ups by email first.
